Wrote and directed 《Between Ming and San Jose》, his NYU Tisch thesis film, credited on the finished film’s own roll as "Written and Directed by Yuang Liu" and named Director on the official UGFTV Intermediate Narrative Production Workshop paperwork. Produced by Hanxuan Wang, with Jianda Ma as Line Producer/UPM and Linna Zhou as 1st AD His instructor attests the method in writing: he worked two weeks as a cashier at a Chinese restaurant and recruited its owner as a main character, cast for Hokkien rather than Mandarin or English, and shot the entire film on an iPhone as a reference pass before principal photography.

The instructor of record for Edward's Intermediate Narrative Film Production course states: "Outside of the classroom, Ed often worked on set as an assistant director or producer. Many of the short films he contributed to have gone on to participate in world-class film festivals, such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the South by Southwest Film Festival."
